Pathways to and Through College

This workshop will take place virtually and will include two live training sessions from 1–5pm ET on Thursday, October 31, and Thursday, November 14, 2024. Attendees should prepare to complete prework before the first meeting and a data assignment before the second meeting.

Attendees of this workshop will:

• Review the research underpinning the importance of receiving college degrees for students and labor markets and identify common barriers to postsecondary attainment students face.
• Use mock data to learn how to independently produce data visualizations to understand the observed variation in college enrollment and completion rates among varying student groups. 
• Practice how to identify research-backed interventions to observed barriers to college access and success and acquire strategies for communicating results to decision-makers. 
• Learn the key data components of assembling a local dataset that can be used to answer the analytical questions addressed in this training. 

This workshop is for individuals who have access to and use longitudinal education data. Attendees will benefit if they are:

• In an analytical role and who have the responsibility for discussing findings with leaders
• Working in organizations or working on a project with access to longitudinal data that follows students from secondary schooling into postsecondary education
• Comfortable using scripting within either State or R to conduct statistical analysis and create data visualizations

However, you will still benefit from this training if you are:

• A leader of a data team (not an analyst)
• An analyst who is not regularly in conversation with decision-makers (including graduate students)
• Comfortable using other statistical analysis programs that feature syntax, like SAS, SPSS, or Python
• Very comfortable using point-and-click analysis and visualization tools like Tableau, PowerBI, SPSS, and even Microsoft Excel
• Working in an organization that has access to individual student-level data (e.g., a school district, charter management organization)

If you do not have access to longitudinal data, this training will not be helpful to you.
