## How strategically do you use data?

Education leaders already have the motivation to improve the strategic data use in their organizations. Yet they often do not know where to start, what direction to take, or even what exemplary data use might look like.

The SDP Strategic Use of Data Rubric is a resource that provides direction and support to education organizations to transform their use of data. The rubric establishes a common language and framework to more clearly illustrate what effective data use at the system-level looks like.

## Using the Rubric

The **Strategic Use of Data Rubric**, developed by the Strategic Data Project, is a tool designed to help education organizations take stock of their data-use in service of student success. This rubric establishes a common language and a structured framework for identifying strengths, challenges, and opportunities for improvement in data use across the organization.

By engaging with this rubric, you will help your organization: 1) Strengthen data-informed decision-making, 2) facilitate conversations with non-technical leaders about data strategy, and 3) track progress in data maturity over time.

The rubric assesses four key pillars that uphold strategic data use. Each pillar includes specific constructs:

- **Strategic Data Leadership:** Goal Setting, Accountability and Monitoring, Decision Making, Continuous Improvement, Ethical Data Leadership
- **Quality Data Systems**: Data Availability, Data Quality, Data Governance, Ethical Use of Data
- **Actionable Analyses:** Strategic Inquiry, Use of Evidence, Responsive Analytics
- **People-First Communication**: Data Culture, Data Clarity, Ethical Communication

Each construct is measured through a series of indicators, which include a set of questions designed to understand your organization's practices. These indicators are rated on a scale *(Emerging, Developing, Practicing, Mastering)* with each rating describing specific behaviors that reflect different levels of data maturity.

The rubric is not a test and does not generate a single score. Rather, it is a reflection tool designed to foster authentic discussions about your organization's data practices, strengths, and areas for growth.

We have recently redeveloped our rubric and are piloting versions of the rubric’s use and wraparound services. Please submit the form below and we will be in touch as more information is available if your needs align with available service offerings.
